Why Upgrade to XPEL Ceramic Tint? (The Science of Comfort)
Window tinting today is about more than just a dark shade—it’s a critical, high-performance upgrade. Unlike basic films that only block light, our XPEL ceramic films are engineered to fight solar energy on a molecular level. This results in superior, quantifiable benefits essential for driving in the Bay Area heat:
Superior Heat Control
Our ceramic film technology provides up to infrared heat rejection, keeping your car dramatically cooler and reducing the strain on your AC system and fuel consumption.
Ultimate UV Protection
We block virtually 99% of harmful UV rays, offering essential protection for you and your passengers against sun damage, and preventing your dashboard and upholstery from cracking, fading, and degrading.
Glare and Eye Strain Reduction
Driving during peak sun or against harsh headlights is safer and more comfortable. Our films minimize blinding glare, reducing eye fatigue on local highways like 242 and 680.
Enhanced Safety and Security
The film adds a protective layer that helps hold shattered glass together during an accident or attempted break-in, reducing the risk of injury from flying glass shards and deterring opportunistic theft.

FAQ: XPEL Window Tinting at Tru-Tints in Concord
Since XPEL films are designed for durability, what is the specific recommended cleaning and maintenance routine to ensure I don't accidentally void my transferable lifetime warranty here in Concord?
XPEL’s ceramic window films, such as PRIME XR and XR PLUS, are engineered for exceptional durability, backed by a transferable lifetime warranty that covers defects like peeling, bubbling, or cracking. To maintain this warranty and ensure your film performs optimally in Concord’s hot, sunny climate, proper cleaning and maintenance are critical. Improper care, such as using abrasive tools or harsh chemicals, can damage the film and potentially void the warranty. Here’s the specific routine recommended by XPEL and Tru-Tints to keep your tint pristine and warranty intact:
- Initial Cure Period (30 Days) : After installation, allow the film to fully cure for 30 days. During this time, avoid cleaning the interior side of tinted windows to prevent disrupting the adhesive bond. You may notice small water bubbles or haziness; these typically disappear as the film dries. Avoid rolling down windows for at least 3–7 days (see question 2 for details) to ensure proper adhesion.
- Cleaning Products : Use only ammonia-free cleaners, as ammonia can degrade the film’s adhesive and clarity, voiding the warranty. Recommended options include XPEL’s Film & Glass Cleaner, mild dish soap (e.g., Dawn) diluted in water (1 tsp per gallon), or automotive-specific cleaners like Chemical Guys Glass Cleaner (ammonia-free). Avoid household cleaners like Windex (unless labeled ammonia-free) or abrasive solutions.
- Cleaning Tools : Use soft microfiber towels or lint-free cloths to clean the film. Never use abrasive sponges, scrub pads, or paper towels, as they can scratch the film’s surface, compromising its clarity and potentially voiding the warranty. For tough spots (e.g., bird droppings), soak with soapy water to loosen debris before gently wiping.
- Cleaning Technique : Spray the cleaner lightly onto the film (interior side) or glass (exterior side), then wipe gently in a circular motion to avoid streaks. For Concord’s dusty conditions, rinse windows with water first to remove grit and prevent micro-scratches. Clean monthly or as needed to maintain clarity and UV protection.
- Avoid Harsh Conditions : While XPEL films are UV- and chemical-resistant, prolonged exposure to acidic contaminants like bug splatter or tree sap in Concord’s warm climate can stress the film if not addressed. Remove these promptly (within 24–48 hours) using soapy water or isopropyl alcohol (70% or less). Avoid parking under trees for extended periods to minimize sap exposure.
- Warranty Compliance : To keep the transferable lifetime warranty valid, have the film installed by an XPEL Certified Installer like Tru-Tints, and retain your installation receipt. The warranty covers manufacturing defects but not damage from improper cleaning or accidents. If you notice issues (e.g., peeling), contact us immediately for inspection, as timely reporting is required. The transferable aspect means the warranty stays with the vehicle if you sell it, adding resale value, provided maintenance guidelines are followed.
By following this routine, your XPEL film will stay clear, durable, and warrantied, protecting your vehicle from Concord’s intense sun for years. Stop by Tru-Tints for a free care kit with your tint job, including an ammonia-free cleaner sample and microfiber towel.
How long should I expect the entire installation process to take for a standard four-door sedan using the DAP computer-cut system, and how soon after leaving your Concord shop can I safely roll down my windows?
At Tru-Tints in Concord, our XPEL Certified Installers use the Design Access Program (DAP) to streamline the window tinting process, ensuring precision and efficiency for your standard four-door sedan (e.g., Honda Accord, Toyota Camry). The DAP system, combined with our expertise, minimizes installation time while delivering flawless results. Here’s what to expect for timing and post-installation window use:
- Installation Time : For a standard four-door sedan with four side windows and a rear window (windshield tint optional), the entire installation process typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours at our Concord shop. The DAP system pre-cuts XPEL film to exact vehicle specifications using a database of over 120,000 patterns, eliminating on-car cutting and reducing prep time. Here’s the breakdown:
- Prep (30–45 minutes) : We clean the interior and exterior glass thoroughly to remove dirt, oils, or contaminants that could affect adhesion.
- Film Application (1–2 hours) : Using DAP’s pre-cut films, we apply the tint (e.g., XPEL PRIME XR) to each window with slip solution and squeegees, ensuring bubble-free alignment. The rear window, with its curves or defroster lines, may take slightly longer for precision.
- Final Inspection (15–30 minutes) : We check for imperfections, verify VLT compliance with a tint meter for California laws, and provide you with a warranty certificate. Factors like vehicle complexity (e.g., panoramic roofs) or additional services (e.g., windshield strips) may add 30–60 minutes, but DAP’s efficiency keeps us faster than traditional shops.
- Window Roll-Down Timeline : After installation, the film needs time to cure as the adhesive bonds to the glass. In Concord’s warm climate (average highs of 70–90°F), curing is faster, but you should wait 3–7 days before rolling down your windows to avoid peeling or creasing the film. Here’s the guidance:
- Standard Wait Time (3–5 days) : In typical Concord weather (dry, 70–85°F), most XPEL films cure sufficiently in 3–5 days. Warmer temperatures accelerate drying by evaporating residual slip solution trapped under the film.
- Hot Weather Boost (2–3 days) : If temperatures exceed 85°F, curing may complete in as little as 2–3 days, but we recommend waiting the full 3 days for safety.
- Cooler or Humid Conditions (5–7 days) : If Concord sees rare cooler or rainy days (below 60°F), curing may take up to 7 days. Avoid rolling windows during rain to prevent moisture interference. During this period, you may notice small water bubbles or slight haziness—these are normal and resolve during curing. We’ll inspect your vehicle before you leave and provide a personalized timeline based on weather and your film choice (e.g., PRIME XR PLUS cures slightly faster due to its advanced adhesive).
Book with Tru-Tints, and we’ll schedule a quick, DAP-driven installation and give you a clear post-care guide to ensure your windows are ready for use without risk. Most sedans are back on the road in under a morning, with full functionality in less than a week.
The content notes that XPEL film helps hold shattered glass together. Can this protective quality interfere with a vehicle's side window airbags, or has the film been tested to ensure safety features remain fully functional?
XPEL’s ceramic window films, such as PRIME XR and XR PLUS, are designed to enhance safety by increasing glass shatter resistance, a feature that can hold broken glass together during accidents or break-ins, reducing the risk of flying shards. This strength raises a valid question about potential interference with side window airbags, a critical safety feature in modern vehicles. At Tru-Tints, we prioritize your safety, and XPEL films are rigorously tested to ensure compatibility with all vehicle safety systems, including airbags. Here’s how this works and why you can trust the film’s safety performance:
- Shatter Resistance Mechanism : XPEL films use a multi-layer polyurethane construction with strong adhesive properties that bond tightly to glass. In a crash or impact, the film acts like a net, holding shattered glass fragments together to prevent them from scattering into the cabin or onto occupants. This enhances security (e.g., resisting smash-and-grab theft) and safety by reducing injury risk from glass shards. However, this strength is carefully engineered to avoid impeding airbag functionality.
- Airbag Compatibility Testing : XPEL films undergo extensive testing to ensure they do not interfere with side curtain or side-impact airbags, which deploy from the vehicle’s pillars or door frames, not through the glass itself. Key points:
- Material Flexibility : XPEL films are thin (typically 2–4 mils) and flexible, designed to break or stretch under the explosive force of an airbag deployment (which can exceed 200 mph). Unlike laminated safety glass (used in windshields), which is thicker and designed to stay intact, XPEL-tinted side windows remain tempered glass, engineered to shatter into small, blunt pieces. The film holds these pieces loosely without resisting the airbag’s path.
- Industry Standards Compliance : XPEL tests its films against automotive safety standards, such as those from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and SAE, to confirm compatibility with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). These tests simulate airbag deployments in vehicles with tinted windows, ensuring the film does not delay or redirect airbag inflation. No interference has been reported in real-world crash data or lab tests.
- Manufacturer Collaboration : XPEL works with automakers to ensure films align with vehicle designs, including airbag systems in models from Tesla, BMW, and others common in Concord. The DAP system further ensures precise film application, avoiding overlap onto airbag-adjacent seals or frames that could affect deployment.
- Real-World Assurance : In practice, side airbags deploy outward and upward, not through the window glass, meaning the film’s presence on the interior glass surface has negligible impact. Over 20 years of XPEL installations, including high-safety vehicles, show no documented cases of tint-related airbag interference. The film’s safety benefits—reducing glass hazards—complement rather than conflict with airbag protection.
At Tru-Tints, our XPEL Certified Installers apply films with precision to maintain your vehicle’s safety integrity. You can drive with confidence knowing your side airbags will function as designed, while the film adds an extra layer of glass safety. Frequently Asked Questions
What’s so special about ceramic tint? (XPEL XR AND XR PLUS)
It could get confusing trying to navigate the different types of tint/film around the market. There are color-stable films, carbon films, ceramic films, nano-ceramic, and probably many more types that I haven’t heard of myself! As simple as I can put it, one distinct feature sets each tier of the XPEL tints/films apart: heat reduction. The XPEL Prime XR blocks around 83-85% of heat while the XPEL Prime XR PLUS blocks around 97-99% of heat. They both do a tremendous job keeping your car cool and comfortable during all seasons of the year, especially summer! I have a heat-lamp demonstration that simulates heat reduction firsthand!
Is window tint applied on the outside of the car?
Window tint is applied on the inside of the car! You may have seen some videos that initially placed it on the outside of the car before applying the tint inside the car; this is normal! The tint starts as a flat surface and must be shrunk/shaped on the outside before it is applied inside to prevent fingers. If tinters didn’t do that, it would be similar to trying to wrap one piece of paper around a map globe; it would have air pockets everywhere!
How long is the tint installation?
The time required for window tinting depends on your vehicle type and the number of windows being tinted. On average, most cars take between 2 to 4 hours for a complete installation. At Tru-Tints, we prioritize both speed and precision, every tint is computer-cut and carefully fitted to ensure a flawless finish. While we work efficiently, we never rush the process, because perfection and long-lasting results are our standard.
